This award-winning adaptive reuse project was celebrated for its innovative use of abandoned space and its overall design excellence. The Adapt Opportunity Zone Awards highlights the achievements of those who have identified opportunities for adaptive reuse solutions nationally, recognizing companies that have been impactful in their communities by demonstrating ingenuity, creative thinking and problem solving through thoughtful rejuvenation of underutilized buildings. BOUDREAUX (architect) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mashburnconstruction.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Mashburn Construction (opens in a new tab)\">Mashburn Construction<\/a> (contractors) are honored to be among those recognized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project\nwas recognized by GlobeSt.com and Real Estate Forum alongside a few Opportunity\nZone projects. The projects are intended to serve as inspiration for the type\nof development that can happen in opportunity zones across the country. \u201cIt is\nexciting to be recognized among projects from larger cities like Atlanta,\nSeattle and Philadelphia. This is just further evidence of the forward momentum\nin Columbia and, even more, the power of creativity and perseverance to\nreenergize the historic cores of downtowns across our state,\u201d said Heather\nMitchell, President of BOUDREAUX.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Developed as a single project, the three buildings located\nat the corner of Sumter and Taylor streets\u2014Powell Furniture, Western Auto, and\nRose-Talbert Paints\u2014now comprise Hotel Trundle and the offices of BOUDREAUX.\nThe hotel encompasses both floors of Western Auto and Rose-Talbert Paints on\nTaylor Street as well as the first floor of the Powell Furniture Building.\nBOUDREAUX\u2014an architecture, planning, preservation and interior design\nfirm\u2014occupies the second floor of this building. The project is an excellent\nexample of adaptive reuse, transforming three abandoned buildings into vibrant\npieces of Columbia\u2019s downtown while retaining original features and restoring\nmissing elements. The City\u2019s establishment of\nthe Main Street National Register historic district made the project eligible\nfor many of these tax incentives. The expertise of local attorneys Rogers Lewis\nenabled the project to take advantage of the combination of these incentives\nwhich created a financially viable project. \u201cMashburn takes pride in bringing\nold, empty buildings back to life. Later that year, the\nproject also won the People\u2019s Choice and the Design Detail awards from the\nColumbia chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Design services for\nboth projects were provided by BOUDREAUX. Mashburn Construction served as the\ncontractor. POND Interiors collaborated with BOUDREAUX on the interior design\nof Hotel Trundle.
