The project was conceived to support projected growth\non campus and the opportunity was taken to be visionary. The entirety of the\nDouthit Hills development represents a remarkable transformation for student\nlife at Clemson, and The Hub is the central piece. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The success of this project is tied to a close working relationship\nbetween the client and the designer, with a consistent eye toward the end user.\nThis relationship allowed the vision for this building to clarify during the\ndesign process. The project as initially imagined in the master plan needed to\nbe re-evaluated in a thoughtful way to provide the student experience desired.\n\n\n\nThere was great excitement\nfor this project, and the desire was to have a vibrant community that would\nserve both upperclass and first-year students, while creating a new welcoming\ngateway. This excitement was crucial to the success of the project, and it was\nimportant to harness that excitement and use in the service of enhancing\nstudent life on campus. \n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-wordpress wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-who-039-s-on-the-move\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"dLlwXci8WD\"><a href=\"https:\/\/whosonthemove.com\/aia-south-carolina-recognizes-excellence-in-architecture-and-design-in-communities-throughout-the-state\/\">AIA South Carolina recognizes excellence in architecture and design in communities throughout the state<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;AIA South Carolina recognizes excellence in architecture and design in communities throughout the state&#8221; &#8212; Who&#039;s On The Move\" src=\"https:\/\/whosonthemove.com\/aia-south-carolina-recognizes-excellence-in-architecture-and-design-in-communities-throughout-the-state\/embed\/#?secret=Dl5f1sArfX#?secret=dLlwXci8WD\" data-secret=\"dLlwXci8WD\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>President Emeritus James F. Barker, FAIA took an early interest in the\nplanning process behind the precinct and the Hub in particular. His analogy\nfrom a workshop, \u201cThey are designing the hole in the donut,\u201d to explain the\nlight court in the center of the building that would serve as the nexus point\nof the precinct was a clear and direct way to communicate the design to other\nUniversity stakeholders. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the programming and design process, the design team and client\nworked together to identify and prioritize what program might go in the\nbuilding to support the project financing and make the best use of the\nuniversity\u2019s resources to have the greatest impact on student life. It became\nclear in the design process that the best way to support students was to focus\non what was important to them, and what would create the most active community.\nA focus on dining, wellness, and retail spaces provides a mix of uses and\ninteractions. Students may sit together at a communal dining table, or work-out\nindividually but together in a spin studio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that it has opened, these meaningful student\ninteractions are currently taking place. The Hub is fulfilling its intended purpose\nas place to gather and interact.
