First Presbyterian Church Spartanburg Renovation

Ways to Give | First Presbyterian Church Spartanburg, South Carolina (en-US)

180 years ago, eight Presbyterians gathered at a house on Main Street in Spartanburg. After signing a covenant that bound them as a church, they preached and celebrated the Lord’s Supper. This was the beginning of First Presbyterian Church Spartanburg, which was the very first Presbyterian church to open its doors in the city of Spartanburg.

We were honored to be the design team to renovate and update First Presbyterian Church, a beautiful downtown church built in 1924. The renovation project, based on a thorough study, focused on making the worship experience better and updating some key areas.

Based upon our initial feasibility study, the enlarged chancel platform features additional choir space and increased space for celebration of the liturgy. The supporting structure was carefully reworked to accommodate new mechanical equipment in the basement space below. Our coordination with the Church’s audio-visual consultant allowed for the integration of a new sound system. Interior design respects the historic character of the church and integrates many of the chancel furnishings. The multi-faceted project also improves the contemporary worship that takes place in Fogartie Hall with its new music platform. Social gathering and fellowship space is enhanced through parlor and outdoor courtyard renovations. All together, the life of the church and especially quality of worship are enriched.
