Restoring a Legacy: Benedict College’s Antisdel Chapel Renovation
We are honored to be working with Benedict College’s leadership to design the transformation of their beloved Antisdel Chapel. Breathing new life into this landmark will have major impacts for campus community. Built in 1932 during the Great Depression under the direction of Dr. John J. Starks, the college’s first Black president, the chapel has long stood as a symbol of spiritual strength and cultural identity. Today, under the bold leadership of Dr. Roslyn Clark Artis, the building is undergoing a thoughtful renewal – one that respects its architectural roots while preparing it to serve future generations. This latest phase builds on previous upgrades, including a restored steeple, a new roof, and an improved climate control system, to further enhance the chapel’s longevity and functionality.

This summer’s renovation integrates modern amenities with historic craftsmanship. From updated audiovisual technology and a sophisticated control room to restored pews, plasterwork, and millwork, every detail is guided by both reverence and innovation. New visual displays, improved lighting, and upgraded acoustics will allow the space to host dynamic events without reliance on outside vendors. A reconfigured, accessible restroom and refreshed finishes throughout ensure the chapel remains inclusive and welcoming. Thanks to dedicated advocates like Dr. Walletta Johnson and funding from the National Park Service, this project not only preserves a vital campus icon – it elevates it as a fully equipped venue for worship, celebration, and learning.
