Topping Out Ceremony for Byrnes Hall
On a bright and hopeful day, Juneau Construction hosted a Topping Out Event for the construction team working on Byrnes Hall at Bryan Mall, Clemson University. This event marked a significant milestone in the $155 million renovation project that Clemson University has launched for its three high-rise student housing buildings: Manning Hall, Lever Hall, and Byrnes Hall. Built in the late 1960s and early 1970s, these iconic structures are set to undergo extensive upgrades to better serve future generations of students.
Byrnes Hall, the first building to enter Phase I of this ambitious project, is leading the way in this transformative journey. The renovations aim to modernize the interiors, focusing on mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. Accessibility enhancements for individuals with mobility disabilities are also a key component of the project, ensuring that all students can navigate the buildings with ease. Exterior improvements include reroofing and the relocation of main entrances to create a welcoming community courtyard and social space.
A notable goal of the renovation is to achieve two Green Globes, reflecting Clemson University’s commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency. By opting for renovation over demolition and rebuilding, the university is not only preserving the historical essence of these buildings but also saving an estimated $125 million. This decision enables Clemson to provide quality housing at a competitive rate compared to other institutions, a testament to the university’s dedication to its students’ needs and desires.
The upgraded living spaces will include study and social areas on each floor, enhancing the overall student experience. This project is a collaborative design effort between BOUDREAUX and Little Diversified Architects, blending innovative solutions with thoughtful design to meet the evolving demands of student life.
The Topping Out Event celebrated the progress made so far, bringing together the construction team, architects, university officials, and students. It symbolized not just the completion of the highest point of Byrnes Hall but also the collective effort and vision driving this transformative project forward.
As we look ahead to the completion of Byrnes Hall and the subsequent renovations of Manning Hall and Lever Hall, we are excited to witness how these upgraded spaces will foster a vibrant and dynamic community at Clemson University. This project stands as a model of how thoughtful renovation can meet modern needs while preserving the integrity and history of beloved campus landmarks.
