Town of Irmo Adopts a New Comprehensive Plan Focused on the Future
The Town of Irmo has officially adopted a forward-thinking Comprehensive Plan that will shape the community’s future through the year 2035. Developed through a collaborative partnership between BOUDREAUX and Stewart, Inc., the “Vision 2035” Plan provides a strategic roadmap that balances Irmo’s growing development pressures with its strong sense of identity and small-town charm.
Located in the northwest portion of the Columbia metro area, Irmo is home to approximately 12,000 residents and is known for its close-knit community and suburban appeal. The Comprehensive Plan sets out a clear and actionable vision to preserve these qualities while preparing for sustainable and inclusive growth.
Launched in Fall 2023, the planning process spanned a full year and was structured into three phases: project initiation and analysis, community visioning and plan development, and implementation and adoption. At the heart of the effort was a robust community engagement strategy that included a Steering Committee of local residents, stakeholder interviews, community surveys, and public open houses.
“In every step of this process, our goal was to listen, really listen, to the people of Irmo,” said Ryan Bland, Senior Planner at BOUDREAUX. “We’re proud to have helped develop a plan that reflects the hopes and priorities of the community.”
Public engagement played a central role. The team gathered 642 responses to a detailed community survey and facilitated open houses at accessible locations such as the Irmo Courthouse and Loveland Coffee. The planning process was also brought to life at Irmo’s signature event, the Okra Strut, where a pop-up booth encouraged residents to contribute ideas and share concerns.
The result is a Comprehensive Plan rooted in local values. Vision 2035 outlines key goals such as expanding housing options, promoting mixed-use development, enhancing public safety, supporting Irmo’s cultural identity, and creating a walkable, vibrant town center. It also highlights the importance of transportation connectivity, natural resource protection, and partnerships with regional and state agencies.
The Comprehensive Plan was presented to the Planning Commission and Town Council for final adoption, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Irmo. With community input as its foundation, the plan serves as both a guide and a promise, to manage growth responsibly while preserving the unique character that makes Irmo feel like home.
