Clemson University Samuel J. Cadden Chapel | Clemson, SC

After developing conceptual designs to test multiple campus sites and then developing fundraising imagery on the ultimate site, our team was honored to be selected to design the Samuel J. Cadden Chapel. Connected to nature and its campus surroundings, the Chapel utilizes natural materials and an expressive wood structure to create a welcome place of respite for both celebration and remembrance. Taking advantage of its hillside site, the chapel features a main level gathering space for 120. The lower level includes two private meditation rooms and a gallery for smaller events that opens to the surrounding Memorial Garden. Sensitive to the environment, the brick piers on the north and south walls are structured internally by cross laminated timber panels and the design integrates a geothermal heating and cooling system. A student driven project envisioned foremost as a place of serenity and introspection, the Chapel is also reservable by student organizations for faith-based and cultural programs and by the broader community for weddings and cultural events.
