Richland Library Northeast | Columbia, SC
We have transformed this library’s foreboding aesthetic into a destination of global cultural experiences through art and activities. On the exterior, public art captures the international focus of the community, while also paying homage to the importance of the river in the development of Columbia through a brightly colored blue wave sculpture. Inside, custom carpet depicting maps of the varied patron’s hometowns lead guests to the Marketplace, a central gathering space for learning and collaboration. The international vibe continues in the Teen Center with a projection wall featuring interactive learning. A teaching kitchen features workstations and camera-led instruction fed to flat panel displays, allowing cooking programs and events to take center stage in the large meeting room. In the enlarged Children’s area a stylized cityscape mural speaks to a variety of cultures to provide an inclusive learning experience. A variety of meeting rooms support a number of additional library and community program needs.
Expanded exterior program space consists of a new courtyard complete with bench seating, welcoming shade structures, and a garden for to support program activities. Situated along Richland County’s International Corridor, the new library speaks to the connections of people and places.
The design was a collaborative effort led by BOUDREAUX and included McMillan Pazdan Smith and Margaret Sullivan Studio.
