Richland Library Southeast | Columbia, SC
A simple library housed within a pre-manufactured metal building finds vibrant purpose with a reimagined exterior facade amplified by key sculptural pieces that wrap the existing building. This exciting theme continues inside with vivid furnishings and finishes. Based on input from branch library staff, our design provides a renovation and addition that speaks to the needs of its visitors, featuring a Teen Gaming Lab, a Tinker Lab (for crafts and fabrication), a Community Forum space, and a Sensory Studio designed for kids with autism and early childhood education. In addition to the nearly 20,000 square feet of interior renovation is a 7,000 square foot covered outdoor space that extends the library’s program space. Complete with a bike repair station, artificial turf for outdoor Storytime, large fans for air circulation, and a platform area for performance, this outdoor component is transforming this community venue.
The design was a collaborative effort led by BOUDREAUX and included McMillan Pazdan Smith and Margaret Sullivan Studios.
